Where does the premiere pick up?
ADAM HOROWITZ: We’re picking up a few months after the events of the winter finale. We’re going to be seeing how everything has settled in Storybrooke and maybe a little how it settled outside Storybrooke.
EDWARD KITSIS: We’re going to find out how Gold (Robert Carlyle) has taken his banishment. We’re going to find out in the flashback how he met and recruited these Queens of Darkness, this team of evil. All of it is going to lead to a couple of surprising revelations about Emma and a very dark secret that Snow and Charming have held onto that we didn’t realize they were keeping secret.

What’s Rumple’s first step with the Queens of Darkness in trying to get his happy ending?
KITSIS: The first step for a man who has lost it all is to get it all back. The first step is how. We know he’s in a land without magic. The premiere is really going to show how he goes about getting it all back and what the story is. As we teased in the fall finale, he realized maybe Regina was onto something, maybe fate has it out for the villains, maybe they need to find this Author. Gold is never one that is afraid to hijack somebody’s good idea.

Can Belle ever forgive Rumple?
KITSIS: That is one of the things in the second half that we’re exploring, which is forgiveness. Can good people make a bad decision? Can bad people make good decisions? Can you come back from the bad decisions you made and how? What he did to Belle is really atrocious. That is not going to be solved with a mixed tape and flowers.

‘Once Upon A Time’ EPs Talk Queens of Darkness’ Descent On Storybrooke

‘Once Upon A Time’ EPs Talk Queens of Darkness’ Descent On Storybrooke

Poor Rumplestiltskin. Despite all of his manipulating, plotting and scheming, his master plan to free himself from a mystical dagger — the one object capable of controlling him — blew up in his face. Instead, his wife Belle used the dagger to banish Rumple from Storybrooke in “Once Upon A Time’s” season four winter finale. But as all the best storytellers know, it’s hard to keep a good villain down.

Why are three Queens of Darkness better than one or two?

Kitsis: In the winter finale, we realized that the one thing the heroes always do is they work together. The villains work alone. Rumple, realizing that his plan did not go the way he thought it would, decided to take a page from the heroes’ playbook. Obviously, the more on your side, the more people you have to wreak hell with.

Both Regina and Rumple are determined to find the mysterious Author. What does a “happy ending” mean to them?

Horowitz: That’s a good question, because what a happy ending means to both of them is something that will really influence how they pursue the Author and what happens when they come across him/her. To get into the specifics of what their happy ending is, that is part of the journey of this half of the season.

Kitsis: Also, for Mr. Gold, for Rumple — he’s had a couple of happy endings, but they don’t seem to make him happy. What happiness is and how we achieve it is a theme we are exploring this half.

Obviously, there’s unfinished business between Belle and Rumple. Does time really heal all wounds? Does Rumple feel betrayed by his wife? How do the two of them react when they come face-to-face again?

Kitsis: I don’t think he feels betrayed by Belle, because he betrayed her. They got married, and on their honeymoon, he immediately started lying to her. The person who has the most resentment is Belle. As she said, she used to see the man behind the beast. Now, she only sees the beast. Unfortunately, Rumple is a person who doesn’t really seem to appreciate anything until it is gone. He has a lot of making up to do, if he can at all.

2015/02/26 - Once Upon a Time Scoops

2015/02/26 - Once Upon a Time Scoops

When The Author is found, if that person really only wants to give heroes happy endings, then will that person be persuaded to help these villains like Rumple and Regina?

Adam Horowitz: That's a great question. What The Author he/she wants or doesn't want becomes very important. Whether or not our heroes and villains will be able to use The Author to get what they want will be one of the central conflicts that unfolds.
Kitsis: And taking a step back, it's not just about finding The Author to get a happy ending, it's finding out what happy endings are for each of our characters. What is Gold's happy ending? He seems to have had two of them and he blew them. And Regina seems to have an inability to be happy. So there's an exploration of happiness and what that means to somebody is something we're also exploring.

Gold wants his happy ending, but does he truly believe he deserves one?
Kitsis: Whether he deserves one or not, he's really going to grab it.

Will his betrayal be the last straw for Belle (Emilie de Ravin)? Or will she always be able to forgive him?
Kitsis: Well, I think she kicked out of town, so she kind of reached her last straw, and it looks like she's moved on a little bit. I would say he has his work cut out.

The Queens of Darkness will be joining Gold to invade Storybrooke. Why these three villains in particular?
Kitsis: Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) was previously on the show, and we always wanted to get back to her, which is why we never fully killed her. Ursula (Merrin Dungey) we kind of set up a little bit and teased in the Ariel episode, and she is a lot of fun. And Cruella (Victoria Smurfit), we just liked her. There's a sass to her, and what we wanted was for Gold to take the lesson of the heroes who always worked together, and realized he needed to work together with the villains. So we just loved the idea of the team of evil.
Horowitz: And when you watch, you'll see that there's a connection between all of them and between our characters that will start to unfurl in those first two [episodes] that will hopefully make it clear why those three in particular.

Will we lose any major characters in this second half?
Kitsis: Major regulars? I mean, there's going to be some death.

2015/02/09 Once Upon A Time' Season 4 Spoilers

2015/02/09 Once Upon A Time' Season 4 Spoilers
Only the bits about Rumple:

Seems like we may have a new addition to the Queens of Darkness roster for "Once Upon a Time," the Wicked Witch. Although we seen Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) stab Zelena (Rebecca Mader) in the season three finale a few leaked photos have revealed that the green villainess is back in action.

1. Episode 16 is said to be focused solely on Rumplestiltskin. Co-creator Adam Horowitz also teased via Twitter that the episode will be titled "Best Laid Plans" and written by Kalinda Vasquez and Jane Espenson.

3. Showrunner Eddy Kitsis teased season 4 spoilers for "Once Upon a Time" during an interview with TVLine. "Rumple is absolutely the Big Bad," he said. "And I would also say that the three women can more than hold their own. It's a very formidable team of evil coming our way."

5. While Rumbelle shippers have doubts that Rumple and Belle will end up together the creators of the hit ABC series feel differently. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight Horowitz said, "What I'll say about this, in all seriousness for the Rumbelle fans, is that definitely Rumple and Belle are not over." Horowitz added that the mid-season finale was just a chapter in the "OUAT" story, and he tried to appease fans, saying, "We're telling a larger story and there are more chapters to come."

13. The co-creators also teased to EW that Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) will be hungry for revenge on Rumple, and that everyone’s favorite pirate might have history with yet another villain. When asked if Hook has a “past” with Ursula, Edward Kitsis replied, “can’t say.” However, Ursula being from the sea and Hook being a pirate the pair having a complicated past seems more than plausible.
